Before Reading Activities

Notes to Parents and Teachers:

In Stage 2 of literacy development (confirmation and fluency), a child can typically read simple, familiar stories and selections with increasing fluency. Have children practice reading fluently to support this stage of literacy development. Take turns reading pages with your child or students so you can model what fluent reading sounds like. Ask them to recount story details, such as character names and event sequences.

Before Reading:

Bilingual books help build vocabulary in both languages. As your child or students read, ask them to look for these words and tell you how they are related:

After Reading Activities

Show What You Know

1. What did the three pigs like to play with their friends?

2. Why did the pigs need to build houses?

3. What type of materials did each pig use?

4. What kind of animal tracks did the pigs see?5. What happened to the wolf at the end of the story?

Write It!

Imagine you have to build a house using only materials found in nature. What would you use and why? Write a story about a character that is lost in the wilderness. They must build a shelter. What kinds of adventures do they have while they are looking for materials?

Activity: Build It

Using materials you find around your home or classroom, build a sturdy miniature house. Make sure you have permission to use the items you find!

Directions:

Once you have gathered your materials, think about the design of the house. What is the best way to build it so that it is strong and sturdy? Experiment with the materials and the design. Could the house you built stand up to the wolf’s huffing and puffing?
