- Whitney
I find her on a blanket on the lawn where our little boy, Carter, crawls around while his cousin, River, toddles. Cricket and Whitney laugh as River tries to help Carter stand.
This is how it’s supposed to be.
The next generation of Gables and Riscoffs are being raised together as family and will never know what it’s like to be enemies.
Commodore and Magnus sit in their chairs behind them, watching the kids and tipping back their own drinks.
Whitney stands as I approach and rushes forward to throw her arms around me. “I just sold more songs!”
I press a kiss to her lips. “I’m so proud of you, Blue. Who this time?”
“Holly picked up two more, but she also brought Boone Thrasher and Ripley Fischer with her. They went through everything I’ve written in the last six months and were freaking out. Boone said he and Ripley are going to record ‘Happily Ever After’ next week so they can release it for their anniversary. How cool is that?”
“Amazing, which is exactly what you are.”
“They invited us to the Grand Ole Opry to hear it performed live for the first time. How do you feel about making a trip to Nashville?”
“I’d go anywhere with you, Blue. You know that.”
And we have certainly done our best to hit as many spots as we can, even while she was pregnant. Our honeymoon to the Seychelles was only the first place on Whitney’s bucket list we crossed off. She doesn’t know it yet, but I’m planning a trip to Easter Island next. But that can wait until after she conquers Nashville.
Rose, Creighton and Holly’s daughter, runs past the blanket with Maddy and Addy not far behind. Karma, Cricket, and Hunter have worked hard to make sure they never want for anything, and Whitney and I have been part of that cause. After all, they’re my nieces too. Laughter fills the air, and a feeling of absolute peace settles over me as I sit down and pull Whitney into my lap.
This is how it’s supposed to be.
Someone produces a guitar, and moments later, Boone Thrasher and Ripley Fischer sing Whitney’s song “Happily Ever After” in perfect harmony while we wait for the fireworks to start.
I hold my wife tighter as part of the chorus washes over us.
I didn’t know it when I stepped off that Greyhound bus,
But you showed me that we could live our happily-ever-after . . .
