Chapters (20)
I am Empress in Atlan. Two white pangolins play at my feet, a white peacock drifts across my lawn, a white unicorn waits in my stable. He has no name. I have never been able to name any other mount. The little girl who had adventures is over and done with; no mature balanced woman has been able to take her place. I am an observer, there is nothing active about me. I am neutral, perhaps negative.
I have reached the end of this book.
My nurse Glurbia’s account-book is quite filled, with minute, cramped writing, even the margins have been used up. Now I shall start another diary—for I must always have such a private degree of my identity—but it will never be the same as this one.
However, the inmost kernel of my soul I must retain. All the rest of me belongs to him, my beloved, to him.
And he loves me sometimes.
