  48. A PREVIEW OF "THE WALLS"

“He said they were gonna leave town together.”

Mo’s heart physically ached, hearing this news. She couldn’t believe it was that easy for Nate to leave. That he would just walk away without any consideration for her or the family. There was no way. This wasn’t his idea. It had to be that girl’s.

“Did he say where they were going? How they planned to get there?” Mo asked.

“He said they were gonna take a bus… somewhere in New Mexico.” Leslie’s tears were making it difficult for her to speak.

Mo patted her leg again. “It’s okay. This is all very useful. Now I need you to do me a favor. Does Nate still have his phone? The one he talks to Ash on?”

Leslie couldn’t hide her shock. God, this girl must think she was a total idiot. There was a reason Mo was in charge. She knew everything that went on with the family. As a rule, the Tribe rejected technology, though Mo kept a phone for emergencies. She reached into her pocket and pulled out the cheap burner phone she’d purchased from the corner store.

“I need you to do something for me,” Mo said.

“Whatever you want, Mo. I’ll do anything.”

“I want you to call Nate. You have his number, don’t
you?”

Leslie nodded, her head bobbing up and down. “Good. Tell him you want to go with him and Ash. Ask him if you can meet him and what time. Can you do that?”

“Of course, Mo. I’ll do anything to make things right.”

Mo leaned over and gently untied Leslie’s hands and handed over the cheap burner phone. She gestured for Leslie to dial, and the girl obeyed.

“Nate, it’s Les… please don’t hang up. I need your help.” Leslie paused, listening carefully. “Nate, I don’t know what to do. I’m scared. Of Mo and the others,” she said, her voice quivering.

Deceptive little bitch, Mo thought.

Leslie’s head bobbed enthusiastically as she listened. “Yes, I can do that. I’ll meet you there. “Okay. I will. Be careful,” Leslie said.

She hung up and returned the phone to Mo, who offered Leslie a bright smile. “My dear, you’ve missed your calling. It appears that we have a star in our midst.”

Leslie laughed nervously. “Nate said he’s meeting Ash at the Greyhound bus station later today. They’re going to Taos. Bus leaves at six o’clock.”

“That’s excellent news. You’ve done a wonderful job.” Mo was starting to relax, confident she would be able to readjust. She leaned over and hugged Leslie, the young woman’s body sinking into hers, her breathing slowing. Mo truly loved this child, just like she’d loved Eli. That’s what made all of this so disappointing.
