“Fucked up? You bet. Maureen did a number on him, and you didn’t help things,” Wishard said. Becca flinched. She didn’t seem to notice, or if she did, she didn’t care. “Nate’s currently on suicide watch and undergoing intensive counseling at Patton State Hospital. Hopefully he can make it through to the other side. It’s going to take time.”
“You’re not pressing charges?” Becca asked. Wishard stared blankly back at Becca. “For Mo’s murder?”
Wishard laughed. “Oh yeah, like cockroaches surviving nuclear war, Maureen Wilson is very much alive.”
Becca shook her head. She must have heard Wishard wrong. “Nate shot her. Point-blank in the chest. I saw it. I saw the bullet hit her…”
“Missed her heart by two centimeters. Fucking one in a million. Doctors anticipate a full recovery.”
This news stunned Becca. She leaned forward, her chest constricting. She hadn’t thought to ask if Mo was alive, but of course she’d survived. Over and over again, Mo defied all the odds.
“I taped her. Mo admitted to everything,” Becca said, her words slurring together. Dr. Osterman warned her these were potential side effects, especially if she got emotional. Becca’s panic grew, worried that Mo could go free. “It was all on my phone. She confessed to it all.”
“I know. I know. We located your phone at the scene, and our techs were able to preserve the recording. Pretty damning stuff. With Mo’s pattern of harassment, the letters from Carlos, as well as Raya’s, Nate’s, and Ash’s testimony, it’s likely she’ll spend the rest of her life locked up.”
Becca hoped that was true. She couldn’t dwell on Mo right now. “What about Raya? How is she coping?” Becca asked.
“Your colleague Officer Stanton’s been looking after her. Trying to secure housing, and get her counseling for possible PTSD.”
Nina for the win, Becca thought, hating that they hadn’t spoken since everything happened. Becca sank back onto her pillow, their conversation sapping her strength, the pressure growing in her temples, a deep exhaustion hovering like storm clouds. “I appreciate the update,” she said, hoping Wishard would get the hint.
“I should let you get some rest,” she said. She stood to leave. “It doesn’t always happen, but I’m relieved this case had a satisfying conclusion.” Becca wasn’t sure she would call any of this satisfying.
“Thank you, Detective. I appreciate everything you did for us,” Becca said, her eyes flickering shut. It took a few seconds to realize Wishard still standing there.
“Is there something else?” Becca asked.
