Becca thought about her promise to Aidan, and Ash. “You’re safe. She can’t hurt you. I won’t let her hurt you.” It was such bullshit. All of it was a lie. If anything, she’d made things worse. Becca’s legs wobbled ever so slightly. Lack of sleep and food and this news were all too much. Christian reached for her. “Becs.”
He reached for her. Becca held up a hand to stop him. “I’m okay. I’m okay,” she said, as though she was trying to convince herself. She took a breath to steady herself. She wanted to feel every bit of this pain and sorrow. She wanted it to fuel her. “I should go check on Ash,” Becca said. That wasn’t entirely true. She needed to think about what she was going to do next.
“Becca, wait,” Nina said, reaching out to stop her. “There’s something else. Something that’s very important.” Becca inhaled. She knew the question was coming before Nina ever even asked it. “Did you use my security code to access the LAPD database?” Nina asked.
Becca could have said no, denied it, played dumb, but she wanted them to understand. “I had to do something. I didn’t want Mo to get away with all of this. I thought this would be enough to keep her locked up.”
“Nina is here because we’re both very concerned. We’re hoping that you might be willing to talk to someone, someone who can make sure you’re coping with all the stress and trauma…”
God, Christian was turning the tables, trying to therapize her. She stared at him, took in the pitying gaze, the almost patronizing tone in his voice. She let out a gasp. He knew. About the pills. About her good-bye notes. However lackluster her suicide attempt was, she’d still done it.
“Nina told you?” Becca asked, her voice barely a whisper. The shame of that day came flooding back, the sense of hopelessness she felt when she grabbed the bottle of sleeping pills, wanting an escape from the ache of losing Christian, and all her worries that she might fail Ash.
Becca glared at Nina. “You promised you wouldn’t say anything,” Becca said, her eyes blurring as she swiped at the falling tears.
Nina shrugged. “I’m not sorry, Becca. Your behavior is troubling. You’re barely hanging on, and you don’t even know it.” Becca’s face flushed. She couldn’t speak, she was so furious.
She could try to defend herself, explain it away, but what did it matter? They weren’t here to help her find Mo, or to help get justice. They were here because they didn’t trust Becca.
“So what is this? My intervention?” she asked.
Christian’s eyes flashed with surprise. “No. Of course not.”
