  48. A PREVIEW OF "THE WALLS"

Wishard leaned against the door, her arms crossed, a defensive posture that told Becca she was preparing herself to deliver bad news. God, she wasn’t sure she could handle bad news. “Dr. Ortiz, I need you to understand all we’ve got on Maureen is criminal trespassing, identity theft for the stolen IDs we found, and cohabitating with minors. Her lawyer is a real shark. Unless I can find something incriminating to hold her on, I’m afraid she will make bail.”

Becca shook her head. “You have Ash’s confession. I heard it. She told me Mo was the one. Mo was responsible. That has to be enough.”

Wishard rubbed her neck, an angry bruise beginning to form. Wishard shot Christian a pointed look. “I wish it was. You wanna explain this to her?”

“Explain what?”

“Becca, your recent actions, the hostage situation in Hollywood, you going down to Skid Row today, that outburst in the bull pen, compounded with your family’s history and what happened with Robbie means your statement might not hold much weight,” Christian said gently.

Of course. Becca understood instantly. They would paint Becca as the crazy person. Everything she’d done to this point, all the risks she took, were about ensuring Mo was arrested for her crimes. Now it was all backfiring. They were just going to let Mo walk away, no justice for her and all those other kids. Becca thought about relenting. Heading back to the hospital and sitting with Ash. But that wouldn’t do her any good. Ash was in good hands. It was up to Becca to keep her promise. She stood up quickly, her legs giving out. She nearly tumbled to the ground. Christian and Wishard moved in unison to catch her before she fell.

“Dr. Ortiz, are you okay?”

“Becs, what is it? What’s wrong?”

She didn’t speak for a second, sucking in air. “It’s my blood sugar. I haven’t eaten anything…,” she said, trailing off.

“Stay here. I’ll grab you something from the vending machine,” Christian said.

Wishard eased Becca back into the chair, reaching over and switching on a fan, cool air filtering through the humid room.

“I’m afraid I have to get back. I want to assure you none of us are giving up. We’re going to get them all. We just need to be patient and do things by the book.”
