Gray, this book was always going to be dedicated to you. It was your encouragement that made me believe I could write my own novels after so many years spent teaching students to analyze them. Your stories of growing up in Athens inspired a wealth of these pages. You named characters and were my first reader and eternal champion. Thank you for being my partner, my best friend, and the short but wonderful months as my husband. Thank you for making lunch so I could keep writing, for all those conversations about craft, for showing me that a life of creativity was possible, because you lived it.
