Fuck.

But before he could freak out internally at the feelings bubbling up, a shaft of light shone through the oak tree and into the garage. Uh-oh. He jogged to the entrance. The lights had gone on at the main house.

“Oh, crap,” she whispered from behind him. “Cowboy’s up. Go!”

They broke into a run toward Charlie’s truck and hopped in. Ash got the engine started and sent dirt flying as he pulled down the driveway. His gaze flicked to the rearview mirror. The door to the main house opened, and Sam Caldone stepped out onto the porch naked as the day he was born, wearing only his boots.

Ash groaned and focused on the road. “Hell, I could have lived my whole life just fine without seeing that. I guess he’s not hiding a shotgun at least.”

“Go, go, go!” Kincaid urged, laughing as she turned to stare out the rear window. “Oh my God. He’s running. With all his business just bouncing around.”

Ash took the turn onto the main road on skidding tires, his heart beating fast and his skin damp with sweat. Slightly rattled. Totally satisfied. Man, that guy was going to be hating life when he saw his truck. “Please tell me he’s not going to run down the main road naked.”

“He’s not that fast.” Kincaid had tears streaming down her face by the time they got far enough away to slow down to the speed limit and head toward Wilder. She leaned back in the seat, gasping for air. “Best. Revenge. Ever.” She swiped at her eyes. “I bet he had a woman over. He was wearing his favorite outfit. That’s just going to make him finding his truck that much better. Explain that one to your date.”

Ash realized he had a stupid big smile on his face, his whole system buzzing. He imagined that naked idiot running over and seeing his shit-filled truck, and a giddy, adrenaline-spiked laugh burst out of him—then wouldn’t stop. His eyes watered with the force of the laughter, and he had to hold tight to the steering wheel to keep the truck in the lane. Kincaid joined in, letting out a loud, snorting laugh, and all the years that had passed seemed to fade away in that moment. They were teenagers again, running away after the dog-food prank, feeling like they’d won some kind of prize.

When Ash finally got ahold of himself, he swiped at his eyes and smiled her way. “He’s definitely going to know who it was.”

“Good. Mission accomplished. Now he’ll know what it feels like to not be able to prove something you know is the truth.” She leaned over and kissed his cheek. “God, I forgot how intense this feels. I kind of want to rip your clothes off right now and ride the high. Too bad we smell like shit.”

Ash laughed. “Is this how you felt when we did this stuff in high school? Because I really would’ve appreciated the benefits of that side effect.”
