Lisa got up from her couch and looked through the peephole across the hallway to see the source of the sound. It was the woman across the hall…not the one that had been here for a couple of years, a different roommate from the seemingly rotating cast in and out of that apartment. From what Lisa could tell, everyone that lived there worked in a startup and only ended staying in the apartment for a few months before the money started coming in, or they had completely run out of their trust fund. They were all what she'd categorize as 'mean girls', the ones who were too pretty, too well put together, too perfect.
But the one standing in the hallway right now, leaning against the door Lisa now assumed she couldn't get into, her perfectly cut angular bob hanging like a sickle from her downturned head, she was anything but perfect.
"Fucking motherfucking shit…I can't fucking believe this. Fuck." The woman said. It was odd to see well-composed girls like this reveal a sailor mouth, but…Lisa had to admit, she found it pretty hot.
Lisa opened the door to her apartment, maybe just to distract the woman from her rage spiral, maybe to get her to be quiet since she would know somebody else was around.
"Locked out?" Lisa said, leaning against the doorframe.
The woman looked up, eyes rimmed with tears, her grey dress soaked and clinging to her clammy skin. When she realized she was being watched, the woman snapped back into a shadow of the pert and composed woman that she always had to be.
"Uh, yes. My roommate was supposed to be here, and she only gave me one key, and I know I left it in the gym, the fucking gym. So I'm locked out." The woman said, sniffling.
"And I'm guessing you're not inclined to walk five blocks in this downpour to get your keys, right?"
"I mean, I guess I'm going to have to." The woman said, wiping her nose with the back of her hand, an unusually improper gesture from someone like her.
"Is your roommate going to be back here tonight? If you don't have a problem with it, you can chill at my place until she gets here…I promise you, my days of being a creepy serial killer are far behind me." Lisa smirked.
This was, on reflection, a very dumb thing to say to this woman. Being a loudly queer woman with a turquoise buzzcut and piercings that said 'please don't talk to me', Lisa already got looks, and making jokes like this only made it worse.
But to Lisa's surprise, the woman's face softened and warmth returned to her cheeks. Somehow, she actually found it funny. "Umm…if you wouldn't mind?"
"I don't mind at all, I was bored anyway." Lisa stuck her hand out toward the woman. "I'm Lisa."
