Placing a high school house party at the center of the story made sense to me because of parallels I saw with the housing crisis, both resulting in violence and destruction. In each case, many individuals made small transgressions or thought only of themselves. But added together, these individual actions added up to a major disaster. On a case-by-case basis, it can be difficult to assign blame to any one person. But whether it’s a party that’s gone wildly out of control or a housing bubble inflated by false hope, the participants will eventually wake up to face a reckoning, and a very steep bill.
