“I bet you don’t,” Will said, shoving the book back into Hunter’s hands. “Why should you?”

“You’re just like everyone else,” Hunter said. “Jealous of what I have. I didn’t ask for any of this.”

“You never had to,” Will spat. “You just do whatever you want, take whatever you want, and no one seems to mind.”

“Is this about Maddie?” Hunter asked, his face flushing. “Because it’s not true.”

“What?” Will said, not understanding. “What are you talking about?”

“Never mind,” Hunter said.

“What did you do?” Will asked. A thought that had been bothering him for a few weeks, and which he’d tried to push to the back of his mind, came rushing out. “What did you do to Maddie?”

“Nothing!”

“Yeah? Why did she jump away from you at the park that day?”

“I don’t know!” Hunter said. “She’s crazy, I guess. Messed up.”

“She’s not crazy, asshole,” Will said. The pieces were coming together. “Where were you the night of the party, Hunter, when we couldn’t find Maddie?” he demanded.

“I told you,” Hunter said. “I don’t remember. I was fucked up.”

“You weren’t so messed up that you couldn’t get yourself out of there before the cops showed up,” Will said quietly.

“Are you accusing me of something?” Hunter asked.

Will thought about the words that Brendan had spat at him the day Will had given him a beating in the locker room. He’d said that he’d seen Will’s friend all over Maddie at the party. Will hadn’t wanted to think about what it meant. It had been easier to assume that Brendan was just trying to give him a hard time. But now, thinking about it, Brendan’s words made sense.

“Is that why Maddie was hiding upstairs that night, all alone and stoned out of her mind?” Will said slowly. “Were you trying to get with her?”

“Will,” Hunter started, but Will didn’t let him finish.

“I’ve seen you flirting with Rosie,” he said. “Touching her when June isn’t looking. I can’t believe I never said anything. It wasn’t good enough for you, was it, having June? You had to have Rosie as well, and Maddie?”

“Will,” Hunter said again, his voice pleading. “Look, I didn’t know what I was doing. I’m sorry. I am.”

So it was true. Now he understood why June had stopped speaking to Hunter. Was he the last person to know? “You have everything, Hunter!” Will yelled. “You couldn’t have just left her alone? She didn’t even want to get high that night. You want everyone to be as fucked up as you are, don’t you? Well, you messed up everything.”
