“I don’t know,” Hunter said, but it looked to Will like he had a few ideas about it. His voice had an edge, and his eyes were bright. His whole demeanor was different from what Will thought of as his usual rich-kid confidence, his wry smile and easy laugh. “You didn’t actually answer me. Did you give my name to the cops?”
“No, I didn’t. And fuck you for thinking that I would.”
“What about Trip?”
“Trip wouldn’t do that.”
“Not to avoid jail time? Come on, Will. Think about it.”
“Can you tell me what’s going on here?” Will asked.
“The police showed up at my house and questioned Lindsay about the party.”
“Shit.”
“And Lindsay, always eager to please, helpfully told them that June and I brought her car home all banged up that night.”
“But she doesn’t know anything about the house, right?”
“Right. But someone told the police I was there. Someone is talking.”
“Well, it wasn’t me.”
“Yeah? Because aside from you and Trip, I don’t know anyone else who’s talked to the cops. I know it wasn’t June. She told the cops to get lost when they tried to talk to her at school.”
“Hunter. First off, the cops have been asking questions all over the place. People are actually afraid to talk to one another at school. They think that if they say anything, someone might turn them in. And second, everyone knows who you are.” It was the wrong thing to say, Will realized, as soon as it popped out of his mouth. Hunter hated having that pointed out.
“Well, someone is using my name to buy their way out of this,” Hunter said, staring at Will.
Will laughed involuntarily. “Hunter, you’re acting crazy. What the fuck?”
Hunter gave him a hard stare. “Just make sure you keep your mouth shut about me. And Trip too. Tell him. You guys brought the booze, and Trip is twenty-one. You know what that means? He’ll be on the hook for all this if anyone finds out. I don’t want anything bad to happen to him. He’s your brother. But he’s got to keep his mouth shut. I do not fucking need this right now.”
Will felt his neck grow hot. “Is that a threat? Leave Trip out of this. I bought the booze, not Trip. He had to finish work, so I used his ID. I didn’t say anything to the cops about you, and neither did he. You need to get your head right, Hunter. Besides,” he added, giving voice to something that had been bothering him ever since the night of the party, “you’re the one who gave the girls those pills. Maddie didn’t even want to do it—you pushed her into it. Nothing would have happened to her if you’d left her alone.”
