“Maybe I’m just stupid,” Hunter said. And then, for good measure: “Does she have to be here for this?” He hated the petulant sound of his own voice. What was it about these conversations that caused him to act like a spoiled child?
“Watch your tone,” Dom snapped, and Lindsay flinched.
Hunter instantly felt worse.
“Lindsay spent the afternoon speaking with the police.”
Hunter swallowed. It looked like they were going to hit every item on his list of fuckups today.
“Were you at this party?”
Hunter didn’t even seriously consider trying to lie. “Yeah.”
“Was it your party?”
“No, Dad, I just stopped by. I swear.”
“Did you help destroy the house?”
“No. Come on. You know I wouldn’t do that.”
Dom leaned back in his seat. “Honestly, I don’t know what you’re capable of anymore.”
“What did you tell them?” Hunter asked Lindsay.
“I told them that I didn’t know anything about a party, and that you spent the night here with June and another girl.” She paused. “And I told them that you brought the car home scratched and muddy.”
“Why did you tell them that?”
“I don’t know. It just came up. Look, Hunter, I wasn’t about to lie to the police.”
“If they showed up here,” Dom said, “that means someone gave them your name. Whoever they’ve caught so far must be helping the police in order to keep themselves out of trouble. I’m sure whoever gave them the Finch family name scored major points.”
“Not everything is about you,” Hunter said.
Dom shook his head, disgusted. “This isn’t about me? I’m a real estate developer, for Christ’s sake, and you just destroyed a house. Or at least that’s what they’ll say. If this ends up going anywhere, the papers will have a field day with it. I have three big projects in front of the county right now, Hunter. How is it going to look when we show up for the land use hearings? This stuff is my bread and butter. These projects fund a lot of the bigger deals we’re doing in New York and Florida. I’m already having a hard time getting the financing together right now. We’re hemorrhaging money on the tax bills on some of these empty lots, and I really don’t need any issues with the local stuff.”
“Annnnd we’re talking about work again,” Hunter said, sarcastically.
