“Teenagers,” Murray said again, his voice even. “But I guess we’ve all been there. I remember scratching up my dad’s car a few times myself. So, how did it happen?”
Lindsay shook her head. “He told Dom that he was kayaking on the river. There was mud in the car, so who knows?”
Murray nodded. “And just for our records, what were the names of the girls that were here?”
“June, of course. That’s his girlfriend. June Jeffries. Honestly, I’m not sure about the other girl. They slept in, and I was upset about the car, so I didn’t offer to make breakfast or anything. She was probably one of June’s friends. They come around a lot.”
“June Jeffries,” Murray said, writing the name in his notebook. He looked at Jake. “I don’t think we have any more questions,” he said, “but we appreciate your time. And thank you for the coffee.”
“I wish I could be of more help,” Lindsay said, already moving toward the front door to show them out.
Murray was getting up to follow her when he stopped to ask one more thing, as if it was an afterthought. “And what time did you say Hunter came home with the car that night?”
Lindsay thought for a minute. “I think it was right around one a.m.,” she said. “I fell asleep putting my kids to bed—they’re still little. I woke up because I heard the alarm being turned off. I thought it was Dom getting home late from work.”
“You’ve been very helpful,” Murray said. “Here’s my card, in case you think of anything else.”
“You owe me twenty bucks,” Tillman said as they climbed into the car.
“I don’t think so, buddy,” Murray replied. “I seem to remember that you placed your bet on coffee and no information. Seems like a draw to me.”
“That’s a detail!” Tillman laughed.
“It’s all in the details.” Murray grinned. “That’s police work.”
“He was there,” Tillman said. “At the party. The timelines match up.”
“Oh, yeah,” Murray agreed. “He was there. We can add him to the list with the O’Connor boys—trespassing and criminal mischief charges, minimum. If we can get anyone to confirm that he was the kid who was selling pills, we might have him on distribution. Watch and see. Now that June Jeffries has come forward, kids will start crawling out of the woodwork. They’ll all want to tell us how they were only there for a few minutes, but they know who did the real damage. They’ll be falling all over themselves to turn each other in.”
