She didn’t have to say anything. She could just cry, or run away, or leave town and never see any of these people again. She didn’t owe June or anyone else any answers. But the way June was looking at her, she knew that June knew. June wasn’t graduating second in their class for nothing. She’d guessed it.

“Hunter’s cologne,” Maddie finally said.

“Axe. It’s body spray,” June said, her voice tense. “Maddie, you have to tell me. Was it him?”

Maddie shook her head, hard. “No, no. He wasn’t . . . he didn’t. It was earlier. Downstairs. He was kissing me. I’m sorry, June. I barely even remember it. I went upstairs to get away from him.”

June’s face flushed. “Asshole. It’s not the first time.”

The two girls looked at each other. “Are you mad at me?” Maddie asked in a small voice.

“Of course not,” June said quickly. “It’s not your fault.” She took a deep breath and seemed to regain some of her usual composure. “Are you sure you don’t remember anything about the other kid?”

Maddie shrugged. The humiliation felt like a real thing, pressing in on her from all sides.

June sighed. “Look, no one wanted to say anything to you, but some kid took pictures. I don’t know who he was. But if you want to go to the police, there might be evidence.”

“Oh my god,” Maddie said, looking horrified. “Are they . . . are people passing them around?”

“Not that I know of,” June said.

Maddie couldn’t tell if June was being truthful. But she didn’t want to know. She made up her mind. “No. I don’t want to go to the police.”

“Are you going to tell Will?” June asked. “About Hunter?”

“How can I?” Maddie said, her voice thin. After all, she thought, she was the one who’d decided to take that pill. She’d let herself get completely out of control, to the point where a stranger had assaulted her. How could she tell Will that she’d also let his best friend kiss her? It was more than she could take. Had she done something to encourage him? She couldn’t even remember. “Please don’t say anything,” she begged June. “I just want to put all of this behind me.”

“I think you should tell him, but it’s up to you,” June said. “It wasn’t your fault. Hunter is an asshole. I don’t know why I put up with him. He’s stoned half the time that we hang out. I’m done, though, and I’m so sorry he did that to you.”

“I’m sorry too,” Maddie said.

“You don’t have anything to be sorry for,” June insisted. “I know you, Maddie. You didn’t do anything wrong. It was supposed to be a fun night.”
