“If it really is just work,” she said quickly, “then I get it. I was afraid . . .” She didn’t want to say it aloud. “Anyway, I know this year has been tough. And I know how focused you are on getting promoted. But if it doesn’t happen this year, it’s not the end of the world. The markets will be back up before you know it. Isn’t that what you’re always saying?”

Ted gave her a long look. “You’re right,” he finally said. “Just another big sell-off today. I came here to unwind and lost track of time.” He sighed. “Anyway, I’m glad you’re here. What would you like to drink?”

Maja ordered a club soda and lime from the bartender, and Ted gave her a searching look.

“Not pregnant,” she said, reading his expression. “I just don’t feel like drinking tonight. Actually, Ted, there’s something that I want to ask you about.”

For a second, Maja thought that Ted looked scared. Then he turned and downed the remainder of his beer, and when he turned back to her, his face was neutral.

Here goes, she thought. “I’m going to see the doctor next week,” she said hurriedly. “I want to talk to her about the possibility of starting IVF. I know it’s not ideal. It’s a lot of money, and a lot of time. And more medications. I know that it’s not what we planned on, and in the past you’ve been against it. But I want to give it a try.” She held her breath. She wanted to add that it was her body, after all, but she knew that wasn’t fair. They both had to be onboard for this to work.

To her surprise, Ted didn’t immediately protest. Instead, he looked a little relieved. He signaled to the bartender for another beer. “I just don’t want to see you disappointed again,” he said. “I know how hard this has been on you.”

“I can take it,” Maja said. “I’m not ready to give up.”

“This is really what you want?”

Maja nodded. “I want to have a family. With you. Isn’t that what you want?”

“Of course it is.” Ted seemed to be thinking. “How much are we talking about?”

“I’ll have more information after I see the doctor,” Maja said. “I’m guessing twenty-five thousand, to start, but insurance should cover some of it.”

Ted gave a low whistle.

“I know it’s a lot, but I think it’s going to be worth it.” She put her hand on his thigh. “I love you.”
