“I got it from two people who are about to leave the starter town. I figured that, if we’re going to fight this Sir Kegan, we need to make sure we don’t die horribly because we’re using beginner spells.”

“Good thinking,” Lucas said. He was actually impressed with the list of spells the staff came with. Unlike the previous one, which had four different elemental spells, this particular one only had two spells, but they both looked great. Instead of Firebolt, this one had Fire Breath, which was very similar to Frost Breath in that it did area-of-effect fire damage to enemies directly in front of the user. The charge-up phase required 10 Arcane Energy, or five seconds for Lucas, and unless the user was able to channel 5 Arcane Energy per second, which would require a 500 total energy pool, the breath of fire spell would only last for two seconds. The next spell was Chain Lightning. It required the same amount of Arcane Energy as Zap, 5 Arcane Energy, but it had two added effects: one could channel up and store three charges of the Chain Lightning spell into his staff, unleashing all three at once if he chose to do so, and the spell would also strike more than one target. Whenever Chain Lightning struck something, it would also connect and deal damage to any players or monsters within six feet of the target as well. It was essentially Zap but with the ability to charge up and strike multiple targets at once. The only downside was that it would strike you or your allies if your target was too close when you cast the spell. It was still a favorite amongst players, as most of them could channel all three charges at once and then clear a room full of monsters up to Level 15, and it was why the guild that had the secret to the spell’s formula, Corvin’s Blazing Bastards, continued to make so much money off beginner Mages on noob island.

“Alright, are we off to kill the big boss now?” Bonnie asked, looking over at the fake accounting book Lucas had made.

Lucas stood up and placed all of the work he had done into his backpack. “Not yet. I have to first go turn in this stage of the quest and get the next one, which means I need to go travel to Dray von Maidbanger’s town.”

“Ah . . .” Nick scowled and glanced over at Bonnie, “Then, can we . . . umm . . . You wanna level with me?” he asked. “I mean, we can just kill some stupid deer or something while he’s gone.”

Bonnie raised an eyebrow. “Are you gonna pay me to help?”

“No . . . I just thought—” Nick started, but was cut off by Bonnie’s reply.
