“I know.” I nod. Cody has worked so hard to get here. While Aubrey and I live in Los Angeles year-round, Cody, his two moms—Jada and Chris—and his little foster brother, Teddy, have a home base in Texas. While we’re shooting, Cody and Jada rent a little apartment in LA, while Teddy and Chris stay in Texas.
But that’s hard on everyone. Cody misses his family. The goal is to get everyone in one place, preferably California, but Cody’s moms don’t want to relocate the family unless Cody’s acting career is secure. Sadie Solves It getting a second season is a big step toward convincing the whole family to move, but they haven’t quite decided yet.
“Also,” Cody goes on, “there have been lots of TV shows filmed at Silver Studios. Why have we never heard about a ghost before?”
“Maybe they’ve kept it a secret,” Aubrey argues. “No one would want to shoot here if that rumor got out.”
“What about Mike making it sound like Betty was the reason Motor Clowns shut down?” I add.
Cody rolls his eyes. “Motor Clowns was canceled because it was a bad show!” Then he looks guiltily out the trailer’s little window and says, quietly, “Sorry, Mr. York.”
We all think for a moment. Then Cody shrugs. “Guys, that ghost sighting was nothing. I’m sure of it.”
“You’re probably right,” I agree, shooting an apologetic look at Aubrey. “We probably shouldn’t get too worked up about this.”
“Party poopers.” Aubrey raises a finger. “But if it happens again? Promise me we’ll do some investigating.”
“Okay,” I say nervously. My heart starts to pick up speed. I’m secretly kind of afraid of ghost hunting.
“I know it sounds scary,” Aubrey says, as if reading my mind. “We’ll have to be brave. Just like Kiki says on the show: The first rule of solving mysteries is don’t be afraid!” Aubrey’s character, Kiki, is fearless. She’s always the one chasing down the bad guys.
“And we’ll search for the logical reasons,” Cody adds. “Just like what Markus says on the show: There’s always an explanation.” Cody’s character, Markus, is the brain of the group, a math and computer genius who has an encyclopedic knowledge of names, faces, and trivia—a lot like Cody in real life. Markus is always the one who breaks down how a crime could have happened according to physics and science.
And Sadie? She’s the leader—and I’m kind of the leader in real life too. My friends look to me to make the final call.
“Good point, both of you,” I decide. “We’ll keep our eyes and ears open. Just like Sadie, we’ll have to eat clues for breakfast!” I snicker, and everyone else does too.
