In minutes, we were behind the soundstage, launching one of the soda cans from the hat like a rocket over the wall of the studio. Later, Aubrey invited us to a sleepover at her loud, messy, chaotic house that very night. We dressed up her giant dog, binged Netflix shows, and came up with a bunch of goofy inside jokes. We’ve been tight ever since.

Aubrey puts the spirit board away. “Forget the séance. Seriously.”

I grab Cody’s hand and squeeze it hard. “We won’t let you leave. We’re a team—on-screen and off. Remember?”

Cody slowly nods. “Yeah.”

“Good,” I say. And at that moment, there’s a knock on the tree house door, and I smell a tantalizing aroma of cheese, dough, sauce, and pineapple.

Pizza saves the day. Again.

Chapter Six

But the ghost doesn’t leave us alone for long.

The very next morning, as I’m eating a fruit and yogurt bowl in my trailer and studying my lines, I hear a scream. I drop the bowl and fly out to the pavement just as the door to Stage Five flies open. Amelia rushes out, her face the color of chalk.

“Get me out, get me out,” she cries as she rushes past me.

I catch her arm. “What is it? What’s wrong?”

She looks at me with terror in her eyes. “I-I saw it again. While I was rehearsing.”

“What?” I ask—though I think I already know the answer.

“This…face,” Amelia whispers. “It was a girl. She was looking at me like…like she was angry!” She throws her trembling arms around me. “Oh Hayley, I’m so scared! She was floating!”

Stage Five’s door opens again, and Amelia’s mother hurries out, followed by Aubrey, Cody, and a few of the other actors.

“Oh, my poor baby,” Mrs. Hart coos, rushing to Amelia’s side. She looks accusingly at Paul, who’s run over from the offices, where the writers’ room is. “Paul, why would you move us to a studio that’s haunted?”

“I-It’s not!” Paul cries. “I don’t know what’s going on!” He looks at Amelia. “Amelia, I’m sure there was no ghost.” He says this last word very quietly. “Can you come back and do the scene, please?”

“No way,” Amelia whispers, throwing a hand over her eyes. “Not if her spirit is still there.”

“Come on, Amelia,” Cody urges. “I was looking in the same spot you were, and I didn’t see anything. Certainly not a floating girl or whatever.”

Amelia suddenly looks annoyed. “Are you saying you don’t believe me?”

Cody shrugs. “Well…”

Amelia puffs up her chest. “It’s probably because I’m an Aquarius. I’m much more in tune with the spiritual world than a Scorpio like you.”
