“As for the whoosh, it was probably just an air current. And as for the face you saw…” He glances at Amelia and trails off.
Amelia crosses her arms. “You’re going to say I’m just going to be dramatic, aren’t you? Spoken like a true Leo.”
Paul holds up his palms. “I love your energy, guys. I love that you’re becoming detectives just like your characters. But let the higher-ups handle this stuff, okay? I’m waiting on a call from the studio head, and I have a feeling everything will go smoothly from there. There’s no ghost. No one pretending to be a ghost.” He winks. “I promise.”
“No more ghost,” we all mutter.
I know we should be relieved, but I don’t feel that way at all. It doesn’t take me long to figure out why.
I don’t believe him. Not the slightest bit.
Chapter Seventeen
Soon after speaking with Paul, all of us are scheduled for wardrobe, or for school time with our tutor, or, in Amelia’s case, for “mom and daughter time” with Mrs. Hart. I’m standing in wardrobe as Romy, our beloved costume designer, fits me in a vintage plaid blazer and some ripped jeans.
“I love how the green in the jacket picks up the flecks in her eyes,” says Vee, who’s leaning against the wardrobe door. I’m going to her next for hair and makeup. “By the way, Hayley, you’re not still worried about the lights, are you? I’d think that’d be all fixed now that the electricity’s been updated.”
I run my tongue over my teeth. “All good.” As much as I want to share my theory with Romy and Vee, I’m afraid they’ll be on Paul’s side. And also, Romy’s new assistant, Kelsey, is here too. She started only after we moved to Silver Screen Studios—so technically, as a newbie, she’s on the suspect list.
But at the same time, I don’t want to suspect Kelsey. She spent the first fifteen minutes of my fitting cooing over Salmon and showing me pictures of her French bulldog, Baxter. How could someone who regularly dresses her dog in a tuxedo be a bad person?
After today’s outfit is chosen, Austin the PA hands me some of the afternoon’s scenes. I rip through them, eager to learn how this mystery ends. We’ve investigated everyone in the pizza game in town, but we’ve run into dead ends every time.
