Amelia takes a big breath. “I took Sadie’s old necklace,” she mumbles. “From season one? The one she was always wearing but kept getting tangled? I wanted to wear it, or whatever. In private.” She ducks her head. “Told you it was dumb.”
“You wanted to wear Sadie’s old necklace?” In the show, Sadie wore a sapphire necklace the first season, and though it was really pretty, it kept getting caught on things mid-scene. That’s why we swapped it out for the sapphire ring.
“You just looked so cool with it on.” Amelia still won’t look at me. “I wanted to see what it felt like to wear it. To be that. Be like Sadie.” Her cheeks go red. “Like you.”
I can feel ice cream dripping onto my hand, but I don’t move to wipe it off. I had no idea Amelia admired Sadie—or me.
I feel touched.
“I’ll give it back,” Amelia goes on. “It was dumb. And if anyone should get it, it should be you.”
“I don’t want it back,” I say quickly. “You should have it.”
Amelia looks at me, a light coming on in her eyes. “Really?”
I nod. “Totally.” And then I add, “You know, it was fun solving the mystery with you. In the show—and in real life.”
Amelia looks dazzled. “It was, wasn’t it?”
“Well, you might have more mysteries to solve,” says a voice above us. “Don’t hang up your detective hats just yet.”
I look up. Paul is standing on the street, grinning down at Amelia and me. Aubrey and Cody have wandered back over too. “What are you doing here?” I ask him.
“Had to make sure one of my stars is moving in okay,” Paul explains. He turns to Cody’s moms. “Everything fine?”
“Peachy.” Jada wags a finger at him. “But you had us scared. Our Cody was losing his mind when he thought the show was going to be canceled!”
“That’s no longer a worry,” Paul assures her. “Thanks to your son. And a few others.” He gives me a wink.
“What did you mean when you said we might have other mysteries?” I ask him. “Has something else happened?” Please no more ghosts, I think. I’ve had enough of things falling from the sky and creepy whooshes of air.
“Nothing like that,” Paul says. “And let’s hope nothing else does happen—certainly nothing that’ll shut us down. But we are in Hollywood, Hayley. It’s a magical place that’s full of history, but there’s a lot of suspicious stuff that goes on. Maybe you’ll be the show’s eyes and ears? You did such a good job last time.”
I blush. “Well,” I admit, “I do play a detective on TV. So it’s not such a huge jump to be one in real life. Hayley’s Detective Agency is open for business!”
