I join my friends and Amelia on the set. We’re filming the scene where everyone brainstorms ideas and suddenly remembers Mrs. Archer and Mr. Grimes. I should be excited, but I’m still thinking about the wire in the doorway.
“What’s wrong?” Aubrey asks, noticing my expression.
“Nothing,” I murmur, though I step closer to her, Cody, and Amelia. “I think we need to keep our eyes and ears open. That ghost—he or she is still around.”
Amelia nods bravely. So do Cody and Aubrey. It’s good to have such a dedicated team.
Vee rushes out for makeup touch-ups, and Peter, the hairstylist, fluffs our hair. Jasper is getting the camera in exactly the right place, and I even see Mike, the guy we met on the first day, drift past. The new boom operator, Hazel, is getting her boom stick ready. I look at her closely. She’s wearing a button bearing a picture of a gap-toothed little kid.
“Who is that?” I ask her.
Hazel looks up and smiles. “My grandson, Howie!” She touches the button. “He lives far away, but I keep begging his mom to bring him out here so he can visit the set!”
“That’s so sweet,” I murmur. But in my mind: Hazel wouldn’t sabotage Sadie Solves It if she wants to show it to her grandson!
At that very moment, someone rushes up to us from behind, holding a bunch of papers. It’s Will, the new writer. “Hey, guys. Um, I have some teeny-tiny line changes. Nothing big, just a few tweaks Paul wanted me to make on this scene.”
“You wrote this scene?” I ask. “Where they realize it’s Mrs. Archer and Mr. Grimes?”
“Yeah.” Will ducks his head bashfully. “I hope you like it.”
“I love it!” I say. “It’s really good!”
Will looks overjoyed. “This is the very first episode I’ve gotten to write. Every day, I wake up and can’t believe I’m an actual writer now and not just someone’s assistant.” His cheeks go red. “Sorry. TMI! Anyway, here are the scripts.”
He passes them to us hurriedly and scuttles away. But again, my mind is churning. Will wouldn’t want the show to shut down. He’d lose his first-ever writing job.
“Places,” Paul calls out from behind the camera. “Hayley? Amelia? Cody and Aubrey? We good?”
“Uh huh,” I say, hurrying to my mark.
But I’m distracted. I know Will and Hazel are just two people, but I want to believe that everyone on this set is nice and wants to be here. And maybe they are. Is it possible Paul’s right? Maybe I am seeing things? Maybe all these strange things are just because we’re in a cranky old building…and nothing more?
“And…action!” Monique the director calls.
