“Aubrey…” Cody covers his eyes. “That’s so ridiculous.”
“Let’s at least do the spirit board,” Aubrey pleads. “What if we can contact Betty? Maybe we can convince her to leave us alone.”
Cody heaves a big sigh. “Fine. Since you won’t shut up about it. But this doesn’t mean I believe in it.”
“Really?” Aubrey sounds thrilled. “Yes!”
She runs to the cabinet and pulls out the board. Then she places it on the coffee table, and we all scoot in and put our fingers on the little plastic planchette.
“Okay.” Aubrey rolls her shoulders like she’s warming up for a part in a play. “Close your eyes, everyone. I will now call the spirits. Spirits, please, is there anyone who’d like to speak to us?”
We wait. Our fingers don’t move. Not a centimeter.
“Hello?” I say in a singsong voice. “Sprits?”
We want another minute, but still nothing. I look at Aubrey. “I don’t think she’s here.”
“Yeah,” Aubrey says sadly. “Guess not.”
But then the planchette jerks. I feel my fingers being pulled in a direction. I open my eyes as the little window in the planchette hovers over the letter B.
“B!” Aubrey turns pale. “Like Betty!”
Even Cody looks freaked. Especially when the planchette next moves to the letter E. “Guys,” Aubrey whispers. “Told you she was real.”
“It’s moving again!” I hiss, letting my fingers drift with the planchette.
But this time, it moves over another E. “B-E-E?” Aubrey sounds confused. Even more confused when the planchette moves to the next letter—a P—and then stops.
“B-E-E-P?” Aubrey looks like her head is going to explode. “Beep? What does that mean? Betty, are you in a car?”
Cody snorts out a laugh. He pulls his hands off the planchette and covers his mouth to hold in more chuckles. “Got you!” he cries. “I was moving it the whole time!”
“What?” Aubrey looks crushed. “Cody! How could you?”
“I am the spirit Beep!” Cody says in a jokey, spooky voice. “I am the ghost of junkyard cars!”
“Ha ha.” Aubrey sticks out her tongue. “You really had me going.” Then she says, “Be another ghost.”
“On the spirit board?” Cody grins. “Sure!”
We put our hands on the board again. This time, we “conjure” a ghost named Spaghetti. She was born in 1654 and owned sixty cats. Then we talk to Moe, who doesn’t tell us anything about his past life but informs us that he’s positive Aubrey has a crush on someone.
“I do not!” Aubrey cries, eyes shining.
“Moe doesn’t lie,” Cody insists. “Moe is saying that it’s Trevor, one of the extras!”
“No way!” Aubrey sounds like she might throw up. But truth be told, I’ve seen her flirting with Trevor, just like Moe says.
