“Boredom.” I write that down. I think of Mike, the guy who first told us about the ghost. “Mike’s worked here for a long time. Maybe he wants to have some fun?”
Aubrey nods. “Mike seemed to know everything about the soundstage. I’m sure he’d be able to rig a reflection on the ceiling.”
“But Mike’s not here today,” Cody points out. “I heard Tracey say he’s out sick. And you saw the lights flicker only a few hours ago, right Hayley?”
I twist my mouth, thinking about my creepy encounter with Vee. “Okay. I’m sure there are other people who can make lights flicker.” Only…who?
“Next stop, Small Town USA,” Austin announces.
He steers us onto a street full of quaint houses, picket fences, and an adorable schoolhouse. I dwell on them for a moment, wondering which we might use for Sadie Solves It scenes. The building on the corner would make a perfect library.
Then I look at my friends. “Let’s think of this another way. What are the weird things that have happened so far? Maybe we can figure out who was on set during each one, and narrow it down that way.”
“Okay, there was the whoosh we felt the first day,” Aubrey says. “You, me, and Cody. Amelia was close by. So were Paul, Monique, and Mike.”
“Second time was when Amelia fainted during my scene.” I’m still bitter. “I was in the soundstage, along with Jasper, Paul, Amelia’s mom, and a bunch of other people.” I glance up front at Austin. Even he was there.
“And the third is when Amelia saw the face and ran screaming from the stage,” Cody pipes up. “I was in there, along with Monique and Vee.”
“Was Paul there?” I ask.
Aubrey looks aghast. “Paul wouldn’t do this!”
“I know, I know.” I feel guilty. I don’t want to blame Paul. “I’m just trying to find a pattern.”
“Actually, he wasn’t,” Cody says. “He ran over from the offices, remember?”
“Right.” I breathe out. “Good.” It would have been terrible if the creator of our show had been pretending to be a ghost.
Then, Cody gets a strange look on his face. “But that’s smart thinking. Because there is a common person in all these ghost sightings. Amelia.”
We all fall silent. Cody shifts awkwardly. “Anyone know where Amelia was this morning when Hayley saw the lights flicker?”
Aubrey’s eyes go wide. “Oh my gosh. That was around nine, right?” I nod. “I was at craft services, grabbing breakfast. And… I saw her.”
“What was she doing?” I ask.
Aubrey glances at Austin, our driver, but he doesn’t appear to be listening. We’ve passed Small Town USA now, and we’re heading toward some more suburban streets with bigger houses.
