  89. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

I let out a long breath of my own and looked toward Will, standing in the corner. “What do you think?”

Will shrugged. “I know Anderson’s a psycho.”

I looked back to Steven, who was wiping at his tears with the back of his arm. “Let me think about it,” I said.

The attorney nodded and rose. She called the guard over, and before Steven was taken out of the room, he said, “If you see Hank, can you tell him . . . I guess just tell him I’m really sorry.”

The attorney left her card on the table. “Call me when you want to talk.”

When we were alone, Will said, “That doesn’t sound like the worst deal.”

“Assuming he’s telling the truth.”

“Seemed like it to me.”

“Don’t trust your first instincts. Despite what people say, they’re usually wrong. Sociopaths can lie through their teeth about everything, and you’d have no idea.” I thought for a second. “Go over to Cecily’s and ask if what Steven said is true, if he and Patty really were into each other and Anderson was the violent third wheel. And get someone from Forensics to test Steven’s car for Patty’s blood. See if you can find the hammer, too.”

“You got it.”

I left the jail wishing like hell I could interview Anderson. I looked back to the monolith of steel and cement and thought, He’s in there, right now. That he was breathing and living while Patty was rotting in a grave seemed unfair, and it had never struck me as unfair before, just a part of life.

I had to watch myself. The Art of Jury Trial as War, chapter 1: “Under no circumstances, ever, ever, ever, feel emotions toward anyone in a case. It will only lead to disaster.”

Jia was at her desk with her head down over some paperwork, and I headed past her to the conference room. The Winchester files were laid out on the table, and as I sat staring at them, I realized I hadn’t had a lawyer pro hac me into the Utah Bar: a procedure where a lawyer could practice in another state he wasn’t licensed under the “supervision” of an attorney licensed there.

“Jia,” I called. “I need you to pro hac me in for this case.”

“Already done.”

“Without asking? Look at you. You know I would’ve killed for an associate like you in Miami.”

She set her pen down and looked at me. “The Yale guys you hired weren’t to your liking?”
