  89. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

“I don’t know. Didn’t hang out with Steven too much. Seemed like a bully to me, so after a couple months I told Anderson I didn’t want to be around him no more.”

“What’d he say about that?”

“Said it was fine. I think Steven picked on him so he didn’t mind.”

“Picked on him how?”

“He would just be smackin’ him around sometimes. He tried to have sex with me right in front of Anderson, to show him, you know, whatever. Damn fool was lucky I didn’t claw his eyes out.”

“Did he stop?”

“Yeah, I got him good. Made his eye bleed, and he jumped off and was hollering and wakin’ up the dead. If my mama woulda woken up, he woulda been in a world’a hurt.”

“Did Steven or Anderson ever mention anything about Patty to you?”

She shook her head. “No. I was surprised as hell when it was on the news. I could see Steven, but Anderson? No way. If he was there, the coward was probably hidin’ in the car or somethin’.” She began looking at her nails. “Anyway, that’s all I know. I can’t really help you none.”

“What about Patty? You know her?”

“Little.”

“Any guys she was dating you knew about? Older guys, maybe?”

She shrugged. “I don’t know. I think she said somethin’ once ’bout some guy that was married and obsessed with her. Wouldn’t leave her alone.”

“Did she say who?”

She shook her head. “I don’t think so. I don’t remember, though. She was kinda quiet. Didn’t talk much. Can’t blame her, though, for goin’ after older guys.”

“Why’s that?”

“Guys our age are damn fools ’round here. Don’t do nothin’. Get married and expect their wives to pay the bills. A nice sugar daddy would be somethin’.”

I nodded, staring at her. “Well, thanks for your time.”

“No worries.”

I left the town house. Steven, at the lineup, had looked like he was about to piss his pants. So she was either lying, or he was an even more convincing psychopath than I thought. No way that oaf would be that slick, so she was probably lying, which then begged the question, Why? If she’d broken up with Anderson months ago, she didn’t really have a reason to lie to law enforcement for him. Which meant someone either had paid her or scared her into saying that. Could’ve been Anderson, but he’d been in lockup with his calls and letters monitored for three months. The person with the most incentive to see Anderson acquitted other than Anderson was his father, Nathan.

I texted Will.

Get me a file on Nathan Ficco. Everything you can find out about him.
