  89. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

He looked to his attorney, who nodded. “Anderson was on some crazy binge, brother. I don’t know what it was. Mescaline and coke, or something. He took anything he wanted. I mean, I’ve seen him wake up and roll over and take a few hits of meth. He just don’t care. So he was on it, man. I mean outa his head. So I’m just tryin’ to get with these girls, and he just messin’ it all up. Just acting like a jackass, grabbin’ ’em and sayin’ stupid shit. So Cecily left, but Patty said she’d stay. We were gettin’ along, but I had Anderson with me, so I said we should go drop him off and go back to my place. She said yes.”

“Let me guess, big guy, she was asking for it, right? It was consensual and she wanted to be raped and tortured?”

“No, no, it wasn’t like that. We was drivin’ back, and Anderson was in the back seat just out of his head. I mean, sayin’ all sorts’a things ’bout the government watchin’ him and how people knew about nine-eleven before it happened and all that. He wasn’t makin’ any sense.” He swallowed and glanced at his lawyer again. “And then he told me to pull over.”

“Where?”

“Just on the side of the road. I thought he needed to piss or somethin’, so I did. Then he pulls out a hammer from the back seat.”

“A hammer? What kind of hammer?”

“Just, like, a hammer. I had my tools back there. He hits her in the head with it and knocks her out. And there’s blood comin’ out of Patty’s head.” He looked down to the table and swallowed again. “I thought she was dead.”

“What happened then?”

“He said we needed to drive to his place. He has his own place. And I said we needed to take her to the hospital, and he pulled out a Smith & Wesson. He stuck it right in my face and said, ‘You gonna drive to my place, or do I need to do it?’ He said it just like that, too. So I drove there.”

“The place in Glassdale?”

He nodded.

“What happened when you got there?”

He looked down to the table and wasn’t speaking.

“Steven, this is where the boys become men. Tell me what happened. If it’s good, and you’re truthful, I will cut you a deal to testify against Anderson. You might be able to get out of this place with a good chunk of your youth left. If you’re convicted, you’re never going to get out of here.”

“He . . . he kept her there.”

“For how long?”

“Like I said, I wasn’t there. I promise. I helped him take her up to his place, and then I left. I don’t know what he did after that.”
