  89. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

“I am gripping with my knees.”

“You’re scared. He can sense it, and it makes him tense. Close your eyes.”

“Um, no thanks.”

She stopped and turned her horse around as she watched me. “Close your eyes, Tatum.”

I exhaled and closed my eyes.

“Feel his heartbeat?”

“No.”

“Then you’re thinking too much. Calm your mind and feel his heart.”

I took a deep breath and didn’t feel anything for a bit, and then I felt the slow pulsing of a heartbeat. Once I felt it, I couldn’t believe I didn’t feel it before. It was like a drum against my legs.

“Is it fast or slow?”

“Fast.”

“He’s tense. Take a deep breath and rub his back and tell him it’s okay.”

I did as she said, and I could feel the heartbeat slow after a moment.

“Horses are perceptive. They feel what you feel.”

“Yeah, well, he must feel confused as shit.”

We began trotting along a dirt path that led behind the ranch to a grassy clearing that seemed to go on for miles.

“What’re you confused about?”

“Russell told me today he thinks I’m a traitor. That somehow my switching to prosecution is saying that our profession as defense lawyers was so awful that I needed to jump ship to live with myself.”

“Do you feel that way?”

“No. We’re not a dictatorship. Everyone gets a lawyer.”

“Then why let it bug you?”

I was quiet a moment. “I don’t know.”

We followed the dirt trail and began climbing a hill. I looked back to the ranch house and could just see the bright portable light by the stables. The house was dark, but the moonlight lit up the valley enough that I could clearly make out the flowers in the grass and the red rocks of the nearby mountains.

“Did the mayor call you?” I asked.

“No. Why?”

“I met with him today. I lied and told him I had a video of him assaulting Patty at Skid Row.”

“And?”

“And he cracked and admitted he’d hired her as an escort. When I asked where he was the night she was killed, he threw me out and said he’d arrest and sue me if the video ever came out. I’m going to, with your blessing, have Will dig a little bit into his life. I need to know where he was the night she was killed. He also said he got the information about how to set up a date with Patty from someone else. I need to know who that someone else was, though I got a pretty good guess who.”
