“There’s no way Gates is gonna let you give me immunity.”
“She trusts me on this.” I lowered my hands. “So what’s it gonna be? Immunity and a million bucks in exchange for my life and testifying against Nathan, or killing me and living life on the run?”
He tapped the gun against his leg. “I want the money now. Right now. And I want an immunity agreement drafted and signed by you and Gates before I do anything.”
“No problem. I’m going to reach into my pocket and take out my phone, okay?”
“For what?”
“I need to transfer the money to a local bank. I’ll get a money order made out to you. And by the way, this time, don’t use your own bank when you go deposit it, huh?”
He nodded and lifted his weapon. “Do it.”
I quickly googled the number to my bank in Miami. I showed him the phone so he saw the number, and I put it on speakerphone.
“Miami First National, this is Karen speaking. How may I help you?”
“Hi, Karen, I need to make a transfer out of state, please.”
Howard lowered the gun. The second he did, I dropped the phone and grabbed the chair from the dining room table. I swung it as hard as I could into his head. The chair shattered against him, raining splinters over me. Howard flew off his feet and hit the counter. I sprinted for the door.
I was outside when the first shot went off. I ran around the house. There wasn’t time to get to my car, so I dashed for the barn and went through the open doors as a round went into the wall of the barn.
The barn was two stories, filled with tools and hay. A ladder went up to the second floor, and I quickly climbed up as I heard his feet on gravel behind me. I looked around the second floor for any weapons, and the only thing I saw was a pitchfork. I grabbed it and ducked behind a bale of hay near the ladder.
“Counselor,” he said. “Get your ass down here and I’ll make it quick.”
I lifted my head a little over the hay and saw him looking to the ladder on the other side of the barn, blood running down onto his neck from the large gash on the side of his head. He went over to the ladder and looked up at the second floor, then lifted his weapon and started to fire randomly through the wood.
“Counselor, I got all day, ya know. And I got plenty’a clips. I’ma hit you eventually. Just come down now and save us a day, would ya?”
