“Bet you just couldn’t believe your luck, huh? Here you are masturbating your whole life to this stuff, and this opportunity just falls right into your lap. And, man, I bet Nathan was crazy pissed, wasn’t he? He pays you to take care of her quickly and quietly and instead you keep her for two days and mess everything up for him. And on top of that, like a genius, you took photos and kept them at your house. Skipped the lecture at the academy on what constitutes damning evidence, did we, Detective?” I had to delay until the cops got here, without pushing him so far that he decided to pull that trigger. “It was your mom, wasn’t it? Those scars you told me were from Iraq.”
I saw the muscles in his jaw flex from biting down.
He ran his tongue over his lip. “You know, I was just going to pop you, but now that you’ve been in my house and violated me sideways, I think I’m going to take my time.”
“Fine, but I have to know: why did Nathan want her dead?”
“Why do you think?”
“I’m guessing he was cleaning up another of Anderson’s messes.”
“You are sharp, Counselor. I’ll give you that.” He looked down to the gun. “Can you imagine having a son like that? Dumber than a box of hair. Anderson had a thing for Patty, but she didn’t give him the time of day. Wasn’t interested in him at all. So they’re driving home from Skid Row and fighting about it, Anderson high as shit and pissed because she’s been paying attention to Steven, and during the fight she tells him she slept with his daddy.” He chuckled. “Imagine what that felt like for him? Can’t hook up with the girl of his dreams, but his fifty-nine-year-old daddy did. So the dumb shit grabbed a hammer and hit her with it. Cracked her good, too.”
“And then they drove to the townhome, where, I’m guessing, he called Daddy, and Daddy called you.”
He nodded. “Called Nathan crying like a little girl, saying he was going to prison. So I go down, and she’s still alive. Can’t even kill someone right.”
I shook my head. “And you saw your chance for some fun and told him to take off and you’d take care of it.”
