She hadn’t seen them since her time in Edinburgh, but they spoke often. Olivia was enjoying her retirement now the Montgomery was sold. She was a doting grandmother to Rory and Milly’s baby son, Eddie. They lived around the corner from her new apartment. Olivia told Eliza she sometimes brought Eddie in to visit Edgar. Maxie was still in New York, still doing her UK TV series work via voiceovers. Eliza had asked Maxie about her playwriting. She had told her that it was on hold for the time being. Mostly, she was enjoying being married to Hazel.
Eliza occasionally asked about Celine, but apart from the photo she’d sent, there’d been no more contact. It was as if she’d disappeared into thin air. ‘Thank God,’ Olivia said. ‘And God help the people of France.’
Olivia sounded so much more relaxed these days. She even spoke warmly about Alex. He had asked her if she would help him choose art to display on the hostel walls. She was enjoying discovering lots of new contemporary Scottish artists, she’d told Eliza. She even joked that it was just as well Edgar couldn’t see what she was buying on Alex’s behalf. He’d be disgusted, she said.
Both of Eliza’s godmothers had claimed credit for her relationship with Lawrence. Maxie insisted it wouldn’t have happened if she hadn’t proposed to Hazel. Olivia said she was the one who’d convinced Eliza to come to Edinburgh. Eliza told them she thanked them both equally, every day. Not only for bringing Lawrence into her life. For so much else.
The first of the passengers from the long-haul flight began to appear.
She remembered leaving this airport a year ago. How different her life was then. Before she’d learned all there was to know about her mother. Before her godmothers told her the truth.
She saw him the moment he came through the doors. He caught sight of her at the same time.
They were both smiling as she walked across the hall into his open arms.
