‘She’s every bit as guilty as Olsen was. Her crimes were worse, even: she builds trust with the sole purpose of destroying young women, removing their fight. Callie’s a strong, intelligent young woman. I don’t think for a moment she would have been fooled by Olsen on his own. He needed someone else. So when you aim that thing, just remember that she was that someone else.’
‘Nothing in that folder mentioned anyone else. Not a woman, that’s for sure.’
The man sighed. ‘They even met a few times. Callie and this woman. They had contact via other means too. That report didn’t contain half of what we found out. I just had to put enough in there that you would understand the man sitting in front of you. I didn’t want to muddy the waters in that moment.’
‘What do you mean, they met?’
‘Like I said, you have a bright daughter. She didn’t just go along with Olsen, even after she had sent him a few images and he had the leverage that had been enough for all the others. She even called his bluff at one point, told him if he was going to share her photos then just get it over with. That was when Olsen put this woman onto her. She made contact, played the role of a survivor who had also called him out. He’s used her like that before. And it works. You get a girl who’s struggling, who might be refusing to play along or considering speaking to their parents or to the authorities, and then a woman makes contact claiming to have been through the same thing. She talked to Callie about what happened to her and how she survived it. She went heavy on how she kept the secret, did as she was told and it all went away like magic. It’s an easy sell: she basically told Callie that taking the easy way out works. It’s what she would have wanted to hear.’
‘And a lie.’
‘Absolutely a lie. This woman is a big part of the control element – the biggest even. They come from a position of trust and they allow the offender to escalate his demands.’
‘It’s a lot of effort. Just so they can get their rocks off looking at pictures of naked kids. What the hell is wrong with these people?’
‘This woman isn’t interested in any of that!’ The man scoffed like it was obvious. ‘This is just about money.’
‘Money?’ Danny rounded on him.
