‘The word on the street is that you’re looking for Gabriel Levin.’ She cut straight to the chase. ‘Am I correct in my assumption?’

He lifted his glasses to rest on top of his head; the movement pushed back his coarse brown hair. He nodded with a suspicious gleam in his hazel eyes.

She smiled. ‘Good thing I know where to find him.’

She slid a yellowed envelope of over to him. ‘I’ll even let your little reporter friend expose everything you find once you’re there.’

He raised a dark brow and outstretched his hand to retrieve the envelope. He peeled back the opening, and Elnora watched as his eyes widened at the sight of the wad of cash she stashed in there. She knew it was more than sufficient for his services; he tucked the opening back into the rest of the envelope and slid it back to her.

‘Keep your money.’ His voice deep and gruff. ‘I certainly don’t need it.’

She tilted her chin, unsure of how to proceed if he wouldn’t take the money. She contemplated how she could convince him without money.

‘My question is, what do you want out of this?’

Elnora leant her back in the chair and scanned for any possible onlookers or spies. Her parents didn’t exactly trust her. But when she saw there was none, she answered.

‘You get someone else out while you’re there.’

He gave her a curt nod. And it was her turn to raise a brow.

‘Don’t you wanna know who that person is?’

He gave her a sly smile and chuckled to himself.

‘I have a vague idea.’ He gazed out to the street. ‘But I do have one question.’

‘Shoot.’

‘Is the reason you offered me this much money because it’s going to be dangerous?’

Elnora smiled.

‘Nothing you’re not already used to, Detective Dion.’
