“This is why you weren’t surprised when Franz started taking potshots at your kitchen back home,” said Nemo. “You expected it.”

“Sooner or later,” said Patton.

“At least we know where to go next,” said Jean timidly.

“What do you mean?” said Ruthie.

“Turns out it’s a good thing Ingrid Weiss provided us with an art historian,” said Nemo. “Jean figured it all out.”

“So where do we go?” said Ruthie.

“We’ll tell them on the way,” said Nemo. “Let’s get packed fast and get out of here. As it is we probably won’t make it before dark.”

“Can we please get something to eat first?” said Patton. As soon as Nemo had shut off the TV, the hunger she had been ignoring had crested over her like a wave.

“Let me go,” said Ruthie. “My picture’s not on the news.”

“Fine,” said Nemo, “but make it fast. And once we’re on the road, I’d like Patton to explain about this bounty squad that’s chasing her.”

“I must say,” said Jean after Ruthie had left, “I don’t miss my conference in Vienna one little bit. I haven’t felt this alive in years.”

Nemo insisted on driving and the first twenty minutes or so of their journey was taken up with consuming the sandwiches Ruthie had bought at a café around the corner from the hotel. Nemo had finally agreed to use the van’s navigation system—after all he had rented it with a false name. Patton pointed out that Ingrid Weiss and her gang would discover soon enough where they were headed so they were essentially racing at this point. They had left Prague and were heading back toward Germany on the E50 when Nemo said what they had all been thinking.

“You want to explain to me why three people are trying to kill you? Because I’ve been wondering ever since we met why you seemed to expect that sniper.”

“What sniper?” said Jean.

“Just let her tell the story,” said Nemo. “We’ve got a long drive ahead, so she has plenty of time.”

And so Patton told them. She told them about Kandahar and the man with the knife in his knee and the explosive vest and how the upper half of Bailey’s body had flown out of the house with the explosion. And then she told them the rest.
