“Tina, wait,” James suddenly said. “I need to tell you something.”
“Okay.” The oldest of his sisters remained while his mother and his other sisters left the room. Her dark eyes were focused on the camera, her brow furrowed. “Is something wrong?”
“No. It’s not that. I only wanted to tell you that I fulfilled my promise to you.”
She blinked in confusion. “You...”
“He’s dead,” James said, his face serious.
Her hand flew to her mouth and her eyes welled up with tears. “Did you...?”
“Yeah, I put a bullet in him, like I said I would.”
She let out a shaky breath. “Thank you.”
Meg and I looked at each other as James and Tina said their goodbyes.
“Did he just say what I think he said?” Meg asked.
“If you think that he killed Kendall for his sister, then yeah.” So that was why he’d been willing to risk his life to catch Kendall as soon as he’d spotted him. I just wasn’t sure what Kendall had had to do with Tina.
“Why would his sister have anything to do with that guy?” Meg cocked her head at me. “Did he betray her or something? I don’t think they were dating. I mean, she’s, what, eighteen now? He was in his thirties. Not that I think it’s not possible. It’s just...”
“Do you have anything on James’ sister in your files? I know we didn’t monitor them as much as his sons, but surely, there has to be something.”
“Let me check, but I doubt it.”
“Actually,” I got to my feet, “I think I’m just going to talk to James about it.”
“Okay.”
I rushed for the door and into the hallway. James was just getting out of the room. When he saw me, his eyes became guarded, and I had a feeling he knew I’d been listening.
“I need to ask you something,” I said. “About Kendall. I know you didn’t want to talk about it yesterday, but I heard what you said to your sister and I was just wondering...”
“Yeah, I had personal reasons for going after that son of a bitch.” He gritted his teeth, his fists clenching.
“Why? What did he do?” Because I was sure Kendall had done something.
“He raped my sister.”
Bile rose in the back of my throat. “What? But how? Did your father know? Why would he partner up with the Desaltis if...?”
“Oh, my father knew.”
“I don’t understand.” I expected Desmond would’ve retaliated for such an attack on his family, even if he hadn’t particularly cared about them.
“He set the whole thing up.”
My mouth opened, but I wasn’t sure what to say. Desmond had been a monster, but to do something like that to his own daughter? Yeah, okay, maybe it wasn’t that much of a surprise, after all.
