“Yep.” She clicked on the play button, and even though the footage was a bit grainy and dark, I could see James as he dodged the bullets, using trashcans and a container as his shield. Kendall was at the end of the alley and he was limping—after we returned home, Oswald had told me he’d managed to shoot Kendall in the leg. We hadn’t expected Romeo’s second-in-command to be anywhere near that place, but I supposed we’d gotten lucky.

My men were just at the edge of the screen as they focused on the shooters who were peeking out from the windows of one of the buildings. James used the opportunity to go after Kendall, but Kendall wasn’t willing to go down easily, and he drew his gun and fired at James, who barely evaded as he dove for the ground.

One of the bullets, though, caught one of my men in the arm, since he was too busy with the rest of the Desaltis’ and couldn’t watch out for Kendall too. When it looked like Kendall was about to get away, James made his way toward him, avoiding one or two more bullets, and finally hit Kendall in the chest. The rest of the Desaltis either were dead or had dispersed, so my men were able to grab James.

The video stopped, and I got to my feet. If my men had been only a few seconds later and hadn’t made it to their car—the last one that had stayed only for them—the cops would’ve gotten them. They had been lucky that the driver was good and also liked racing, so he’d managed to get the cops off their tail before coming here.

“Do you think Romeo will find a replacement for Kendall soon?” Meg asked. “I mean, you haven’t picked your second yet and...”

“I don’t know. He’ll probably find someone.” My case was completely different, and I thought that maybe I didn’t even need an official second-in-command. I could always pick someone different to lead a certain operation.

“Is there anything else you need? Because I’d like to get some sleep. I’ve been working on a new project for hours, and I don’t even know what time it is. Felipe can assist you when he gets here.” Meg looked up at me.

“No, that was all. Thanks.” I offered her a small smile and headed out. I needed to talk to James and find out why the hell he’d thought risking his life to get Kendall was a good idea, especially with the cops being so close. Sure, losing his second would affect Romeo, but not that much. In fact, I’d had no idea James knew what Romeo’s second looked like.
