“And thank you for that. Do you think it could’ve been one of my own?” I asked, and listened to the gunshots raging outside, but I didn’t think the Desaltis would be coming here any time soon since they were still busy with my men. The only problem would be if they got their hands on the drug, but I was sure Brent and the others would defend it until their last breath. I only hoped we were stronger than our enemy was. Still, that bullet seemed to have come from a direction where I hadn’t seen any of the Desaltis, or at least I thought my men were supposed to be there.
“I don’t know. Someone might have snuck up on them, saw you were in range, and took a shot.”
“Or we have a mole.” I gritted my teeth. “Someone must have told the Desaltis where we were. I’m not sure there’s any other explanation. Only a few of us knew where we were really going because Brent held off on telling anyone exactly what our mission was. So maybe once they figured out what this was about, they alerted the Desaltis.”
James only shrugged, then moved a little to take a peek through the door.
“Are they coming?” I supposed we could always go to one of the other rooms and wait for them to come to us, then either shoot them or grab their weapon, but I didn’t have many bullets left.
“Not yet, but they’re getting closer.”
A soft laugh escaped my lips, and James turned his head toward me.
“Why are you laughing?” he asked.
“Because I was really looking forward to finally being able to do something and not just stay at home and wait. And now... look how things turned out.”
“At least it’s not boring.” Amusement flickered through his eyes.
“Oh, yeah, that’s just...” Something hit the window that wasn’t far from us, and it burst into pieces, which meant our enemy was approaching fast. I jumped closer to James, and suddenly his arm was draped around me. Someone’s footsteps sounded in between the shots, and James and I exchanged a look. He let go of me and took another quick peek through the door, then had to pull back to avoid a bullet coming his way.
“Let me...” I turned toward him and pressed myself against his chest so we were both right next to the door. Extending my arm, I blindly fired through the door and hoped I wouldn’t miss or hit one of ours. A cry came from outside, and I risked a peek. The Desaltis’ man was on the ground, and I breathed out a sigh of relief.
