- The Gift (excerpt)

“Do you think they might be coming here? That they found out somehow?” I made my way into the yard and looked toward the street, but there was only darkness.
“I don’t know. Felipe and I are trying to get some footage, but once we do, it might be too late. And it’s night, so a lot of cameras are too fuzzy or useless.”
“I don’t see anyone.” But just because they weren’t here didn’t mean they wouldn’t come eventually. “Let me know if anything else comes up.” I ended the call and waved at Brent, who was carrying a few packages of the drug to one of the cars.
“What’s wrong?” he asked, stepping closer.
“Meg just called to tell me she and Felipe lost the Desaltis. They’re going somewhere, but we don’t know if they’re on their way here or to someplace else.”
“That’s awfully helpful,” he mumbled. “I’ll tell the men to hurry, but if another one of our stash houses is attacked, I’m not sure we’ll be able to get there in time to defend it.”
“It won’t matter if it’s just one.” I hoped the Desaltis weren’t planning something bigger. They weren’t supposed to know we were here. Maybe they still thought we might have figured out where Desmond’s special drug had been and that we’d already hidden it in one of our houses.
“Where are we going to take this?” he asked. “Our stash houses aren’t as safe as we thought they were, and if we find another place or use one of the houses we recently acquired in our new territory, someone might see us and figure out what we’ve got.”
“We’ll take it with us. Home.”
“Are you sure? If anyone finds out we have it there, they’ll come for us.”
“But that’s the only place we can always defend, and it’s huge. Just take it there and then we’ll come up with something. We still haven’t even found out what this drug is, so we might end up throwing it all away.”
Brent’s head jerked back. “Throw it away? Are you serious? If it’s something bad for business, we can secretly resell it to some idiot across the country.”
“We’ll see,” I said. “Just get it in the cars so we can leave. Is one of the cars ready to go? I could leave first and check out the situation.” If the Desaltis were coming here, we’d see them, although in that case, they’d see us too, but we might be able to get them to chase us and lead them to some other place.
