“What?” I groaned. Coded messages and a billion security measures were starting to give me a headache, although I kind of liked the idea of a safe that would blow up in someone’s face if they tried to steal from me. But then I’d have a hole in my room or in my house, so yeah, maybe it wasn’t such a good idea.
“The area on the map... It’s supposed to be in this city like it says at the top, but I don’t recognize any of this.” He offered the map to me. “Do you see anything familiar?”
I studied the map and what appeared to be one of the parts of the city, but James was right. It didn’t look familiar. Actually, it kind of did, but it was slightly off. “This bar definitely isn’t near a library like it says here.” I pointed to the other end of the map. “The library should be, like, up there.”
“Give me that.” James took the map from me and lifted it up toward the light. “It doesn’t look like there’s anything beneath it.”
“Maybe those names and marks are supposed to confuse us,” I said. “So that we wouldn’t figure it out and so that we’d think this was something random that didn’t make sense.”
“You’re right. We should ignore everything written on it, find another map, and check which part has streets and buildings that resemble this.”
“What if it’s not a stash house but a small factory?” My phone vibrated and I got a text from Meg, who was already sending some of our men here. I supposed they’d find time for this since this was our priority now.
“We’re going to find out,” he said.
“Yeah.” I sure as hell hoped we would. “This has to be something big, and the Desaltis or whoever knew about it.”
“It’s probably the Desaltis since they’d been taking your shipments and planned to get their hands on this one.”
“But they couldn’t have known we’d come to this house to disable the alarm.”
“You’d come eventually. Or someone else would. Or they’d come up with a way to disable the alarm, find your fingerprint, or something. We only made the whole process faster for them.”
“Yeah, except now their guy’s dead and they’ll know something happened.”
James glanced at the safe. “Maybe we should close this and hide the map.”
“You think I have a mole?” I couldn’t keep the edge out of my voice.
“We don’t know, but the less people know about this, the better.”
“Then we won’t be able to analyze the safe.”
