“How do you know it’s them then?” It wouldn’t surprise me if we had a new enemy. Those always seemed to pop up when you least needed them. Not that you ever needed an enemy, but still, some healthy competition was good, but no one was going to mess with my shipments.
“Because whoever attacked us came through their territory, and you know they wouldn’t allow just anyone to pass, even if it was to attack us.”
I ran my hand through my hair. “I need to see all the info.”
“Meg has it. Come on.” He started down the hallway, and I rushed after him. This definitely wasn’t good.
“You’d think everyone would be afraid to attack us now that we practically mowed down the Ezzatis.” I glanced behind me because I’d just remembered James, but he wasn’t there. Great.
“What? Did your dog run away?” Brent asked.
It didn’t matter where James was, because it wasn’t like there weren’t any guards and alarms at every step, and no one could pass through the door without a code. He wouldn’t be going anywhere, but I hoped he wouldn’t get himself in trouble with anyone here. I couldn’t believe I was actually worried about something happening to him rather than him doing something, but then again, it would all be his own fault because he hadn’t come with me.
“Our enemies may be thinking that we’re stretching ourselves thin. The Ezzatis’ territory bordered with ours, but our men now have to be posted everywhere, and the number of our shipments has increased with demand. We can’t guard everything,” Brent said, probably because he realized I wasn’t going to say anything.
“But if we move our men, someone’s going to try to take over and we can’t back down now.” Sometimes I really disliked the drug business. No, scratch that. I just plain hated it, but this was my family’s legacy, and I would never disappoint my parents, wherever they were now.
“You’re right. We need to find out who’s behind the attack, respond swiftly, and make sure this doesn’t happen again.”
“Easier said than done.” I made my way into the tech room. Meg and Felipe were there arguing about something. Felipe’s dark head shot up as he saw Brent and me enter, and his dark brown eyes focused on us.
“Guys, I think we have a problem,” Meg said as she typed something on her computer.
“Please tell me you’re not talking about a new problem,” I said, and Meg grimaced. Right. Why had I even hoped things would get better when I knew they wouldn’t?
“We caught some messages on the radio,” she said. “But they’re in some kind of a code. We don’t understand a damn thing.”
