“Right.” I’d have to ask Meg what exactly we had on file for James because I hadn’t been really paying attention. My phone vibrated, and I realized it was Meg. “You’ll have ten minutes to talk to your family,” I said to him. “A guard will be in the room with you and everything will be recorded. I’m sure someone will tell you the rules, but you know what happens if one of you says the wrong thing. The room’s right over there.”
I started toward it, and James followed me. He probably wanted to talk to his family, and he’d even get to see them, because Meg had set up a video conversation.
As soon as we came closer, the guard at the door opened it and let him inside, and I went to find Meg. James was occupied and under watch anyway.
“Hey,” I said to Meg as I entered the room.
“Hey.” She flashed me a smile, looking up from one of the computers. Surprisingly, she was alone in the room. Her blonde hair was tied up in a ponytail, and her blue eyes focused on something on her screen and then back on me. “Your husband is hot, especially for an Ezzati.”
“I can lend him to you if you want,” I teased.
“Are you serious? Because I...”
“No.”
“Oh.” She pouted. “No one understands why you married him, though. I mean, it was awesome to watch Desmond lose his mind...” She lifted her finger up. “Not literally. Although, that part was cool too, but I’m talking about...”
“Yeah, I know.” I took a seat in one of the chairs next to her. Various camera feeds were on the screens around us. James was on one of them too, and I tried really hard to ignore him.
“Okay, so tell me. What’s up with that? Why are you keeping him around? I know he looks really, really good, but he’s an Ezzati. Do you think we might need him for something? As bait? Or a bargaining chip? Or...” She gave me an expectant look.
“I don’t know. We’ll see.” My gaze kept going back to the screen. “What do we really know about him? Does he have any attachments that we need to consider?”
