“Yeah, I do.” My phone vibrated, and I pulled it out of my pocket. It turned out I had a new email, and when I checked the sender, a frown formed on my forehead. “What the fuck?”
“Is something wrong?” Meg asked.
“I just got an email from someone I don’t know. Can you tell me whose address this is?” I showed the address to her, and she quickly typed it into her search system.
“Um, not really. Do you want me to try to trace it?”
“Yeah. It has an attachment. Can you scan it for viruses?”
Meg’s eyebrows shot up. “Do you think someone’s sending you mafia spam? Like, hey, Mafia Queen, send me some cash and save me from my debt or something. I’ll reward you with a billion dollars.”
“No one is supposed to know this email address. Did we get hacked or something?” I handed her the phone and let her work her magic on it. I definitely wasn’t about to open a suspicious email without checking with her first.
“It’s not a virus,” she said after a few minutes. “And I can’t trace the sender. It’s all encrypted.”
“But it’s safe for me to open it, then?”
“Yeah, sure. Go ahead.” She returned the phone to me.
I clicked on the email and nearly dropped my phone. A gasp escaped my throat.
“What is it? Did someone send you their nudes?”
Actually, it was much, much worse. Someone had taken photos of James and me kissing on the street that night when we’d defeated Romeo. How the hell had that happened? I scrolled past the images and finally read the message. My hand flew to my mouth, and I thought I was going to throw up.
“What? What’s wrong?” Meg’s gaze was glued to me.
“If I show it to you, you have to swear you won’t tell anyone.” I had a feeling that since she’d been digging through my phone to search the info about the sender, she could pull up the email too, so I needed to be sure she wouldn’t utter a word about it to anyone.
“Yeah, I swear.” Her face was completely serious, her eyes wide.
I placed my phone in her palm and she looked down at it. “Dear Arianna,” she started to read it out loud, her voice barely a whisper, “if you don’t send James away, I will kill him. I’ll do the same if you tell him about this email. He’s your weakness, and you can’t afford any if you want to be a true leader. Remember, I’m always watching you.” She looked up at me. “Is that some kind of a sick joke?”
