“I didn’t know what had happened.” He looked at her. “Electra is my ex-wife. We’ve been over for years. She has no interest in me personally, but she does want us to write songs together. From what I can guess, she flew up here to make trouble. Now, you can believe me or not, but that doesn’t matter. The important person in all this is Dena. I have to tell her the truth. She’s suffering and hurt and believes she made a fool out of herself, and it’s all my fault.”

Winona looked in the bag. “They’re nice-looking avocados.” She returned her attention to him. “She’s not at school. She’s at her mama’s house. Reggie was in a car accident yesterday, and Dena took the day to be with her.”

She quickly filled him in on what had happened. Micah forced himself to stay and listen when all he wanted to do was run to Dena’s parents’ house. The only thing that kept him in place was the fact that he didn’t know exactly where that was.

“But Reggie’s all right,” he said when Winona had finished.

“A little banged up, but otherwise, she’s fine.” She gave him the address and told him how to get there.

He started for the door, then turned back. “You really packed up my room and rented it to someone else?”

“We did.”

“I’ll be back for my stuff. Don’t give it away.”

Winona smiled. “I’ll wait and do whatever Dena tells me to do.”

“Fair enough.”

“You don’t have to stay with me,” Reggie said for the fourth time that morning. “I’m fine.”

“I’m keeping you company,” Dena told her. “We’re hanging out. It’s fun.”

“You’re monitoring me.”

Dena smiled. “If I’d been in a car accident, you’d be doing exactly the same thing, so get over it.”

She was proud of herself for acting normal. So far, no one had guessed her heart was shattered into a thousand pieces that would never be made whole. She was devastated and emotionally battered, not to mention exhausted from not sleeping, but she knew that one day, years from now, she would feel better. That was what happened. People healed and moved on. She would do the same. It was just the time between then and now that was going to be awful.
