She collapsed on the sofa and covered her face with her hands. This couldn’t be happening. It couldn’t. She’d given him her heart, and he was going to get back together with Electra?
Her cell phone rang. She pulled it from her pocket, hoping against hope that it was Micah. Instead the caller was her mother.
“Hi, Mom,” she said, trying not to sound like she was crying.
“Dena, Reggie’s been in an accident. Her SUV flipped over and she’s unconscious.”
Twenty-Nine
Toby drove as fast as he could, given the road conditions. It was dark and he was on a mountain highway. Even though it hadn’t snowed that day, there was still plenty on the side of the road, and he knew there would be ice.
He’d struggled with debilitating terror ever since Harrison had called to tell him about the accident. The only sound in his head was his son crying that Reggie wouldn’t wake up and there was blood everywhere.
From what he’d managed to get from Harrison, some asshole driver had clipped Reggie, sending her into a spin. The jerk’s truck had slammed back into them, sending them tumbling off the highway. At that point, Harrison had given the phone to a man who had stopped. The stranger had assured Toby that they’d already called 911 and that Harrison and Belle appeared unhurt. But Reggie was bleeding and unconscious.
Thankfully, the accident had occurred only a few miles outside of town. He was there in less than thirty minutes and had found two highway patrol cars and an ambulance already on scene. A couple of tow trucks pulled up behind him on the side of the road. He stopped a few yards back and jumped out of his SUV, then raced toward the group of people, calling for Harrison.
“Dad! Here!”
He found his son wrapped in a blanket and an EMT standing a respectful distance away from Belle, also in a blanket, who glared menacingly from Harrison’s side.
“This your son?” the man asked.
“Yes.” Toby scooped up Harrison and held him tight. His boy hung on like he was never going to let go.
“I wanted to check him out, but she won’t let me near him.”
Toby freed one arm and wrapped it around the Great Dane.
“You’re a good girl, Belle. A good girl.” He swallowed against the tightness in his throat. “Harrison, how do you feel?”
“I’m okay, Dad. We flipped over and it was scary, but I didn’t hit my head or anything.”
Toby handed him to the EMT and took hold of Belle’s collar. “I’ll keep her back. Where’s Reggie?”
The man pointed toward the ambulance. “They’re taking her to the hospital in Wishing Tree. She hit her head on something.”
Toby looked at his son. “I’m going to see Reggie for a second.”
