“All right.” Leigh’s voice was reluctant. She rose, then squeezed Reggie’s hand. “I’ll be back first thing in the morning. I want to be here when the doctor comes by.”
She and Vince hugged Reggie, then Dena, before walking out of the room. Dena smiled at her.
“You need anything?”
“I’m good.”
“You didn’t eat.”
Reggie grimaced at the thought of food. “Yeah, not tonight.” She closed her eyes. “My head hurts.”
“Wait until you look in the mirror. You’re going to shriek.”
“That bad?”
Dena took her hand. “You have a black eye and scratches. The wedding pictures are going to be epic.”
“I don’t know if I can cover a black eye with makeup.”
“I already have a call in to Paisley to help with that. She knows more about makeup than any of us. And while we’re discussing logistics, I should inform you that Paisley and Shaye made the delivery and are back home. So you can let that go.”
“The hats. I totally forgot about the hats.”
“You had a few things on your mind. Oh, and Belle is spending the night with Harrison. They both were pretty determined.”
Reggie smiled. “Do not tell me I’m losing my dog.”
“Never. It’s a summer fling.”
Dena’s tone was light enough, but there was something in her eyes, Reggie thought. Unless that was the concussion talking.
“You okay?” she asked. “Did something happen?”
Dena stared at her. “Aside from my baby sister getting run off the road and flipping her car? No.”
Reggie wasn’t sure she believed her. “You’re not lying?”
Before Dena could answer, Toby walked into the room. Despite the throbbing and the drugs, Reggie perked up at the sight of him. Probably because he looked good. Tall and strong and very serious.
“My cue to leave,” Dena said, kissing her cheek. “I love you. I’m sleeping with my cell phone right next to me tonight, so if you need anything, text or call. Otherwise, I’ll see you tomorrow.”
She left.
Toby took her seat and reached for Reggie’s hand.
“How are you feeling?”
“Not awful. Dena said I have a black eye.”
He smiled. “You do. It’s impressive.”
“Great. And the wedding’s in a couple of days. I’ll look like a freak.” She saw his gaze shift to the side of her head. “Yes, I know they shaved my hair. I just don’t know how bad it looks.”
“You look amazing.” He raised her hand and kissed the back of her knuckles. “Thank you for saving my son today.”
“I’m just glad he’s all right. And Belle. I understand they’re having a sleepover.”
