“Get over, you fool,” she whispered, glancing in her rearview mirror.
The driver didn’t seem to be watching, because the pickup got closer and closer. She sped up, but it kept coming, then suddenly jerked to the left, as if to go around her. But the driver miscalculated and clipped her left rear corner.
Her SUV instantly began to spin. Reggie consciously relaxed her grip on the steering wheel, waiting for her SUV to pick a direction. She steered into the spin, easing off the gas, slowly bringing the vehicle under control.
“It’s okay, Harrison,” she called. “Hang on to Belle.”
She knew their seat belts would keep them safe. Thank God she’d insisted Belle be strapped in.
She’d nearly gotten control of her car when she saw the truck that had hit her was still spinning on the highway. It swerved wildly, as if the driver didn’t know what he was doing, then suddenly headed for her. She tried to drive out of the way, but it slammed into her, pushing her SUV off the road.
The world spun as her vehicle rolled. Harrison screamed, Belle yelped and Reggie felt something heavy slam into her head.
Reggie came to slowly. Her first thought was to get to Harrison. Her second was that she was going to throw up. It was only then the pain exploded in her head and her side.
She knew exactly what had happened. She’d been hit twice, and the SUV had flipped. It was back on its wheels now, the windshield cracked, the engine off. It was only then she noticed the quiet.
“Harrison?” she managed. “Harrison?”
“I’m okay.”
His voice came from behind her.
She turned and saw him in the back, Belle next to him. They both looked shaken.
“Are you hurt?” she asked as Belle whimpered.
“Reggie, you’re bleeding!”
“I’m okay.”
The words were automatic. She unfastened her seat belt and assessed the damage. She was pretty sure she could walk. She brushed her face and realized that she’d hit her head on something. The blood was warm and sticky.
“Move your fingers and toes,” she said, trying to find her handbag. “Can you?”
“Yeah. My chest hurts a little from the seat belt, but I’m okay.”
She opened the car door. She had to find her purse and call for help. Out on the highway, she saw several cars stopping and knew they would call 911, but she had to let Toby know what had happened.
“I need my phone.”
“I’ll get it.”
Harrison released himself and Belle, then got out of the SUV. Belle followed. She shook herself off and trotted around to sniff Reggie, as if making sure she was all right. Harrison opened the passenger door.
“Got it.”
