“Take the man at his word,” she told herself. Nothing was going to happen. As much as she hated to admit it, he was right. She loved the fantasy of sex with Micah, but the reality was a little more intimidating. For one thing, she’d never been with a man she didn’t have fairly significant feelings for. She just didn’t see the point of sex for sex’s sake. For another, he was leaving in the morning, and while he swore he was coming back in a few days, maybe he would get to LA and realize everything he’d been missing. Plus, she was a mother-to-be. Didn’t that call for a little more decorum?

She walked into the bedroom and pulled back the covers, then put a night-light in the attached bathroom. She surveyed her pj wardrobe and decided she had nothing Micah-worthy, so she went with the Santa cats. After washing her face and brushing her teeth, she texted him that she was ready.

As soon as she hit Send, her stomach dropped to her toes. What if he’d changed his mind? What if this was just a very bad joke? What if—

She heard a knock on her door. OMG! He was here.

She let him in, then watched while he hung his coat and stepped out of his boots. Without them, he was barefoot, wearing sweats and a T-shirt. She raised her gaze to his face.

“I’m incredibly nervous,” she blurted before she could stop herself.

“Me, too.”

“Really? But you’re so urban. I wouldn’t have thought you were capable of being nervous.”

He gave her a lopsided smile that had her toes curling. “It’s my first time, too.”

Before she could fully absorb the tender wonderfulness of his words, he was pulling her into his arms and holding her tight. He didn’t try to kiss her. Instead, he rested his cheek against her hair and sighed.

“This is nice,” he murmured.

“It is.”

“I like the cats.”

“They’re new this season.”

She felt him chuckle. “Do you get new holiday pajamas every year?”

“Sure. I start wearing them Thanksgiving night. Then I switch back to regular pj’s on New Year’s Day.”

“I know I said this before, but I’m going to miss you. I wish you could come with me.”

She stepped back. “To Los Angeles? I’ve never been. My parents took us to San Francisco when I was sixteen, and I flew over it when Reggie and I spent a week in Mexico.” She wrinkled her nose. “My parents were more into vacations like driving to Mount Rushmore than taking us to a big city. Although I would like to see Disneyland one day.”

He cupped her face and stared into her eyes. “I’ll take you there.”
