Reggie stared at her. “Are you crying? What’s wrong? Do you know you’re having a girl? Isn’t it too early to know? Did you have to do blood work? Are you all right?”

Dena waved her hands in front of her face in a futile attempt to hold back the tears.

“I’m fine,” she said, her voice thick. “Totally fine. It’s not a health thing. It’s just I didn’t remember what my baby room looked like. I’ve seen the pictures, of course, but when we were in the store, looking at baby furniture, I didn’t recall the similarities.”

Reggie angled toward her. “Hey, what are you talking about? When did you go to look at baby furniture? There’s no store here.”

Dena shrank back, obviously fighting guilt. “Yes, well, um, I was in Seattle a couple of nights ago.”

“What? How? There’s no way you could have taught school and driven over in time to get to a store, and then get home in time to teach. That’s crazy. Do not tell me you drove the pass at night, by yourself.”

“I flew.”

“Okay, this is just crazy talk. You flew? Dena, you’re not making any sense.”

Her sister surprised her by smiling. “Micah chartered a private jet and flew me to Seattle. We went to a baby furniture store and then out to dinner.”

While Dena explained about their evening together, Reggie found she was having a little trouble staying upright in her chair. Falling over in a dead faint seemed the most obvious reaction to what she was being told.

“Wait,” she said, forming a T with her hands. “Rock star Micah flew you in a private jet all the way to Seattle so you could look at baby furniture?”

“And then we went to dinner. Yes. I’d had a bad day. He wanted me to feel better.”

“Holy crap. He’s falling for you!”

Dena blushed and looked away. “He’s not. He’s very sweet, but it doesn’t mean anything.” She touched Reggie’s arm. “At the store, he mostly talked about missing his wife, Reggie. This isn’t about me. It’s about the fact that I’m pregnant. He’s reliving his relationship with her, in a way. I think it’s about the baby and the season.”

She sighed. “Believe me, I wish it was something else. I wish it was chemistry and having fun together, but it’s not.”

Reggie’s head was spinning. She wasn’t sure how many more revelations she could handle in one sitting.

“I don’t believe it’s all about his late wife,” she said. “I think there’s a very good chance he’s interested in you.”
