Which was a hundred percent true and a tiny bit disappointing. Not that she wanted anything to happen with Toby. It was just she hadn’t been out with a guy in a while, and being with Toby was fun. Plus he was very easy to look at, and he made her laugh. He’d always been a good kisser—she wondered if that had changed.

“So boring,” Paisley said with a sigh. “As my love life has become a desert wasteland, I expect my friends to provide me with vicarious entertainment.” She looked at Shaye. “How sad is it you’re the only one of us in a relationship?”

Shaye smiled. “With the best man who ever lived.”

“Young love,” Paisley grumbled. “Save me.”

“You just said you wanted to live vicariously,” Camryn pointed out. “You can’t turn around and complain about young love after that.”

“I am charming with the contradictions.” She grinned. “What about you, Camryn? Any hunky guy visiting for the holidays?”

Instead of joking back, Camryn turned away. “No.”

Paisley immediately blanched. “I’m sorry. Did I say something bad? I didn’t mean to.”

Camryn’s smile was forced. “It’s not anything you could have known.” She paused. “I was seeing someone before my mom died. Actually, I was engaged. When I came back and found out how sick she was, I knew I’d have to relocate home so I could help my mom and take care of the business. The twins had already been through so much and were about to lose their mom, there was no way I could ask them to move to Chicago.”

Reggie got a bad feeling in the pit of her stomach.

Camryn tucked in a bag of M&M’S and zipped her backpack closed. “When I told my fiancé, he dumped me. He said he wasn’t interested in moving to some town no one has heard of, and he wasn’t willing to wait.”

“What a jerk,” Shaye blurted, then covered her mouth. “Sorry.”

“Don’t be sorry,” Reggie said, moving to Camryn and wrapping her arms around her. “He is a jerk and worse. What happened to in sickness and health?”

Camryn gave her a grateful look. “I guess he didn’t plan to mean that part.”

Dena pressed her lips together. “Can we get someone to beat him up? I don’t know anyone personally, but I could ask around.”

Paisley looked impressed. “Girlfriend, you have depths.”

“I hate it when men act like that. You needed him and he wasn’t there. He should have taken care of you instead of abandoning you in your hour of need.”

“I agree,” Reggie said forcefully.

“This is why I don’t date,” Paisley announced. “Just when you think you’ve found your one true love, they crap all over you.”

“I thought you weren’t dating because no one had asked you out,” Dena said.

Paisley grinned. “Yes, well, that, too.”
